Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the antioxidant activity of 30% ethanol extracts of Rehmanniae Radix Crudus depending on storage period. This study was performed to investigate the antioxidant activity of 30% ethanol extracts of Rehmanniae Radix Crudus depending on storage period.
Methods : Rehmanniae Radix Crudus (RC) depending on storage period extract were prepared using 30% ethanol. The RC used immediately was R0, and the RC stored at 2 month was R2. The total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents were analyzed. And 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) scavenging activity assays were carried out to determine the antioxidant activities.
Results : Higher total polyphenol contents were found in the R0 extract (3.69¡¾0.02 §·/g) than in the R2 extract (3.62¡¾0.08 §·/g). The flavonoid contents in R0 and R2 extract were 1.50¡¾0.07 §·/g, 3.76¡¾0.40 §·/g respectively. Also, the DPPH free radical scavenging activity in R0 and R2 extract were IC50=524.43¡¾4.14 §¶/§¢, IC50=570.17¡¾1.43 §¶/§¢ respectively, and the ABTS free radical scavenging activit were IC50=700.54¡¾4.68 §¶/§¢, IC50=789.34¡¾3.20 §¶/§¢ respectively.
Conclusions : These results suggest that R0 extract is superior to R2 extract in anti-oxidant capacity thus R0 can be applied in variable antioxidative products.
